The relevance of sustainability in international procurement is increasing due to higher stakeholder requirements. Therefore companies must also ensure the compliance of economic, environmental and social criteria with their suppliers in the emerging markets. The challenges in the area of quality, working conditions and environmental protection are especially large with suppliers from these countries. In order to overcome these challenges a sustainable supplier development is required which pursues environmental and social objectives in addition to economic goals. However, there is a lack of a adequate model for a sustainable supplier development, which explains the implementation of economic, environmental and social practices.
The research of this work deals with this gap. The goal is the design of strategies for a sustainable supplier development for sourcing from emerging markets. Based on a two-stage literature review relevant concepts and strategic approaches of supplier development and sustainability are elaborated. By using multivariate analysis methods and in-depth case studies it is examined how companies are implementing sustainability in their supplier development and what strategies they are pursuing.
The contribution of this research is a design approach consisting of integrated strategies for a sustainable supplier development. This approach supports companies with the systematic implementation of sustainability in the sourcing from emerging markets. Companies are able to plan the implementation of measures in the long term and to save costs. Recommendations are provided for purchasing and procurement managers which help overcoming implementation challenges. Sustainable supplier development is a relevant lever for strengthening the competitiveness of companies.
